Flying Clipper

While a lot of cruise lines tempt customers in with the latest innovative high-tech (sometimes out-there) amenities, Star Clippers go for a different approach. If you’re familiar with their current fleet you’ll know this is the cruise line to go with if you’re looking for a traditional sailing experience. With dark wooden finishes and the use of giant sails and natural wind power to glide cruisers to their destinations, this cruise line’s goal is to keep the memory of authentic sailing alive but mixed in with the modern amenities of a cruise ship.

The fourth – and newest – addition to their fleet follows the same long-standing craftsmanship that Star Clippers has become known for. Christened the Flying Clipper, this new ship was announced at the end of March and is set to welcome passengers aboard in late 2017. While not many details have yet been announced there are a few things we already know about the new vessel.

1. It will be the biggest ship of its kind

Clocking in at 8,770 gross registered tonnage and powered by a collective 6,350 square metres of sails. If you’re looking for the intimate atmosphere for a traditional tall ship but still want to relax in spacious surroundings, this is the best you’ll find.

2. It is a near replica of the France II

History buffs will be eager to learn that the Flying Clipper was modelled after the second largest commercial merchant sailing ship in the early 20th Century. The France II was also one of the most luxurious ships of its time and Star Clippers hope to recreate the feel of this classic ship with the announcement of Flying Clipper.

3. She will be ecologically sound

Like her sister ships, the Flying Clipper will be fitted with a high-tech modern engine but will make use of her 35 sails wherever possible to diminish any environmental impact.

4. Traditional features that customers love will be part of the design

Regular Star Clipper sailors will be glad to know that the well-loved library, bowsprit net and al fresco Tropical Bar will be making an appearance on this new ship.

5. Pool and water-sports fans will love taking a dip

The new vessel will include several modern amenities, including facilities for those who like to take a dip. There’s three pools on the top deck and also a water sports platform in the stem that can be used while the ship is in harbour.
