At Barrhead Travel, we are very proud of our Modern Apprenticeship Programme and our many team members who started their careers with us when they had only just left school.

Our Modern Apprenticeship Programme is not just for Travel Consultants, either. We offer Modern Apprenticeships in several of our Head Office Teams. Here is Rachael from our Human Resource Team who started off as a Modern Apprentice and is now an HR Assistant.

Hi Rachael, tell us a little bit about yourself and your role at Barrhead Travel?

I am currently an HR Assistant and I have been with Barrhead Travel for almost 3 years.

I joined Barrhead Travel as a Modern Apprentice in the HR Department, and once I completed my Apprenticeship I then progressed onto the role of HR Administrator where I was responsible for all the HR administration which consisted of maintaining all HR spreadsheets and completing new starter packs.

At the end of April 2019, I was promoted to my current role as HR Assistant which has a lot more responsibility. This takes me a step closer to my goal of becoming an HR Advisor. I am also developing my own knowledge by completing my CIPD at college.

What does an average day look like for you?

Answering phone calls and e-mails, assisting staff with HR-related enquiries, liaising with our employment law team, assisting payroll, sending offer letters to new hires, updating the HR database, co-ordinating absences: sick lines, return to works, maternity/paternity leave.

What did you do as part of your Modern Apprenticeship?

I carried out assessment work which was given to my assessor who would come out to the office for visits and support me while I received on the job training. I carried out various duties including ordering uniforms for all staff and processing all new starts. At the end of my apprenticeship, I gained my SCQF Level 5 in Business and Administration.

What was it about a career in HR that appealed to you?

I enjoy giving advice and helping people on a regular basis. I love not only supporting my own team but all other departments and branches in the company when they require help and support.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering a Modern Apprentice in HR?

You must be approachable as you will be dealing with a range of different people. It is also very important to have a motivational attitude and be prepared to deal with a challenging situation (if and when they arise).

And finally, what’s your favourite thing about working at Barrhead Travel?

My favourite thing about working for Barrhead Travel is that there are so many fantastic progression opportunities for people who are willing to work hard to achieve their goals. I have learned so much while working here and continue to learn new things on a day to day basis and, of course, I love working alongside my amazing team.
