A Charming Start in San José
Our journey began at Hotel Grano de Oro in San José, a beautifully restored Tropical Victorian property that balances historic charm with modern luxury. My spacious room, with its plush bed and marble bathroom, set the scene for a restful night’s sleep. Tranquil courtyards, rich wood interiors, and vintage photographs offered a glimpse into Costa Rica’s past, while the hotel’s renowned restaurant delighted us with fresh ceviche and fish. It was the perfect introduction to the country.
Into the Rainforest
From San José, we drove to La Fortuna through lush mountains, misty valleys, and vibrant plantations. Before checking into our hotel, we visited Chachagua Rainforest Hotel & Hot Springs, where hummingbirds flitted through dense greenery and the air buzzed with life. Rooms were designed for immersion in nature, with hammocks, outdoor showers, or even private pools. The highlight was the Jungle Treehouse, complete with a wraparound balcony and jacuzzi overlooking the treetops. Meals were fresh, locally sourced, and served with warm Costa Rican hospitality.

The Magic of Arenal
Our next stop, Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa, lay at the foot of the mighty Arenal Volcano. Natural thermal springs wove through the property, creating a sanctuary of relaxation. Spacious rooms opened onto rainforest views, and honeymoon suites offered private plunge pools or outdoor baths. When rain cancelled our ziplining plans, we embraced the magic of the hot springs instead, lazing in volcanic waters while a tropical storm rolled overhead — hummingbirds and butterflies all around. Dinner at AVE, the resort’s thermal-springs restaurant, was outstanding, with Caribbean meatballs, plantain, and a decadent Chocobanano dessert.

The following day, we soared through the canopy with Ecoglide Arenal Park. The thrill of flying past the volcano was matched only by spotting toucans, a sloth, and industrious leafcutter ants. Later, we walked the Arenal Hanging Bridges, where a local guide revealed spider monkeys, snakes, and colourful birds. That night, a guided nature walk introduced us to the rainforest’s nocturnal life, from frogs to the amplified chorus of the jungle.
Culture and Connection in Nicoya
Heading west, we explored Nicoya, one of the world’s five Blue Zones, known for longevity and health. Here, we met Mujeres del Maíz (“Women of the Corn”), a grassroots group preserving ancestral maize traditions. We shared tortillas, stews, and stories, learning about their role in empowering women and sustaining local culture. It was one of the most moving experiences of the trip, reminding us of the value of community-led tourism.

Sunset in Nosara
Our final stop was Lagarta Lodge in Nosara, a coastal haven of eco-luxury and sweeping Pacific views. From the infinity pool at sunset to mornings with hummingbirds dancing outside my balcony, every moment was pure magic. My Flor Blanca Suite, with its ocean-view shower and storm-lit skies, was unforgettable. Nosara’s surf culture, yoga retreats, and nearby wildlife reserves made it the perfect finale to our journey.

The Jewel in the Crown
Back in San José, our guide Hernan left us with words that stayed with me: “The first time you visit Costa Rica is truly only the first time.” He was right. You’ll fall in love with the land, the ocean, and the food — but most of all with the open-hearted people, the true jewel in this remarkable country.
