Amanda PhillipsHi Kelsey, tell us a little about yourself!
My Name is Kelsey and I’ve been with Barrhead Travel for five years now. I first joined Barrhead Travel as a Modern Apprentice in the Training team when I was 19, which I completed in 6 months.
I have now moved onto working in the Web Design Team and last year I received Employee of the Year in the Marketing Department category.
What was it about the Barrhead Modern Apprenticeship scheme that appealed to you?
I previously hadn’t ever thought about doing an apprentice in travel. It was only when I was in a Barrhead Travel branch booking my holiday that the Travel Consultant asked me if I had ever considered it. I then looked into it and decided to apply.
Tell us about the work you did on the Modern Apprenticeship Programme?
I helped pull together the training courses for our staff and I organised training events with suppliers. Part of my Modern Apprentice was to also try out other areas of the business. The plan was for me to provide staff with training classes but I began to feel out of my comfort zone – and this is when I looked into moving elsewhere. I’ve always had a passion for design and at the time the team was expanding so I was able to transfer.
What are your responsibilities now within Barrhead Travel?
My responsibilities now are updating creative on the website, designing e-newsletters and other digital marketing materials. I also help out when needed in the print team – who design creative visuals for our brochures and press adverts.
What did you find the most valuable part of the Modern Apprenticeship Programme?
It’s a great programme for someone who isn’t sure what they want to do yet, plus you get to learn while being paid. Also, if where you start as within the company isn’t right for you, they will help you find the perfect department.
Finally, what is the best thing about working at Barrhead Travel?
Every team that I have worked within has always welcomed me and I feel like I have a little work family.
