Since Kevin’s gap year 20 years ago to Australia, he has been working in the travel industry booking dream holidays for his customers and at Barrhead Travel, we wanted to find out what exactly Kevin loves about Australia and his recommendations for future customers.

Meet Kevin Preston from our Oswald Street branch!

My favourite city has to be Melbourne. Sydney has the scenery, but Melbourne has the life. With its buzzing café culture and live music scenes, great bars and restaurants and there is an almost European feel with its passing trams. A great number of attractions including the Great Ocean Road and the vineyards of the Yarra valley are just a short drive away. A trip to the Melbourne Cricket Ground is a must for any sports fan too.

Its a tough call between Noosa and the Whitsunday Islands for my favourite part of Australia, but Noosa just edges it. Beautiful beaches and natural parks, backed up by bohemian Hastings Street, lined with hip boutiques and a choice of restaurants from simple cafe’s to gourmet fine dining.

My best experience whilst being in Australia has to be snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef.

I would always recommend Australia as part of the beauty is its an all year round destination, with the Tropical North being at its best in our Summer and Southern Australia being best in our Winter. Its a vast country so plan ahead to get the most out of it, pick out your key experiences and plan the trip around that. Maybe beat the jet-lag by a stopover in Asia, it can break up the journey nicely.

Top tip! When packing, Less is more! It’s generally pretty laid back and dressing for dinner isn’t really the norm. Just make sure you have strong factor sunscreen at hand!
