International Women’s Day is a celebration of strength, independence, and breaking barriers—qualities that define solo female travellers. More women than ever are embracing the freedom of solo travel, proving that the world is theirs to explore. However, while solo travel offers incredible opportunities, it also comes with challenges, from safety concerns to logistical headaches. That’s why group tours are becoming more and more popular for women who want the best of both worlds: adventure with the confidence of a built-in support system.
To explore why group tours are a fantastic option for solo female travellers, we spoke to Emma Holmes. Emma is one of three female experts in the Touring & Adventure team here at Barrhead Travel and also is an experienced solo traveller who has explored destinations across the globe.
The Best Destinations for Solo Female Travellers
Emma has travelled extensively, both as a backpacker and as part of group tours. Some of the incredible destinations include New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Central and South America, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Fiji, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan.
When asked about her favourite experience, Emma found it difficult to choose just one!
“Probably either seeing the Big Five in Tanzania, where we were lucky enough to see a lioness and her three cubs not two metres away! Or seeing the ‘Gates of Hell,’ the Darvaza gas crater in Turkmenistan, with no barriers and a lot of heat!”
These unforgettable moments highlight the incredible experiences that group tours can offer—adventures that could be difficult to organise safely as a solo traveller.
Why Solo Female Travellers Should Consider a Group Tour
While backpacking alone can be an exciting challenge, Emma strongly recommends group tours for solo female travellers.
“I would 100% recommend it. Backpacking is a fantastic way to travel, but the benefits of joining a tour when you are solo are almost never ending. You have an immediate community of likeminded people to share the experience with, so you don’t have to go up to random people in a hostel dorm to make awkward first conversations (unless you want to, of course!)”
The biggest advantages? Safety, convenience, and friendship.
“You’ll see more and get better value for money. What you can fit in with a tour vs doing it yourself is amazing. Everything is taken care of, so you don’t have to spend half your time booking things or struggling with maps.”
The Power of Female Friendships Through Travel
One of the most empowering aspects of group travel is the lifelong friendships it fosters.
“I first went solo travelling in 2008, and I still keep in touch with some of those friends I made. Over the years, I’ve been to weddings, baby showers, reunions, further group tours, birthdays, meals, and nights out. These are friends from all over the world.”
Being part of a travel community isn’t just about sharing the journey—it’s about building a global network of strong, independent women who inspire and bring out the inner adventurer in one another.
Feeling Safe While Exploring the World
Safety is a top priority for any female traveller. While solo backpacking can be rewarding, it can also be risky. Emma shares her personal experience:
“I have been solo backpacking where I sadly came home early from a trip as I didn’t feel safe. I was always second-guessing myself. I have never felt like that on a group tour.”
With a local guide who prioritises your safety and a group of fellow travellers, women can enjoy their trip with confidence rather than worrying about their security. From airport pickups to travel advice and group excursions, tours offer peace of mind from start to finish.
Advice for Women Considering Their First Solo Group Tour
If you’re thinking about embarking on your first solo adventure but feel unsure, Emma has one simple message:
“Do it! You’ll feel safer, you’ll have a community of fellow travellers who may turn into friends for life, and you’ll pack so much more into your trip. You’ll also likely save money compared to booking everything separately. It’s hassle-free and completely worth it!”
This International Women’s Day, celebrate the power of female travel. Whether you’re setting off on your first adventure or looking for new ways to explore the world, a group tour could be the perfect way to embrace independence without doing it alone!
